UN Secretary-General in China

China has been commended by the United Nations Secretary-General for its "strong commitment" to multilateralism and contribution to UN peacekeeping efforts.

Ban Ki-moon is in the country this week to attend commemorative events marking the end of the Second World War.

Mr Ban met with China's President Xi Jinping on Thursday.

Among the issues they discussed were the Sustainable Development Summit to be held later this month in New York.

The UN Secretary-General also met with the country's Foreign Minister and the Premier of the State Council, among other officials.

Elections crucial to DRC development

Upcoming elections in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are critical for the country's continued development and security, according to a team of international envoys.

Local elections are scheduled to begin in October while a presidential vote will be held next year.

The envoys call on all political stakeholders to swiftly agree on the terms for a credible process.

They stressed that the elections should also be transparent, credible and inclusive.

The international envoys for the Great Lakes of Africa represent the UN, the African Union, the European Union, the United States and Belgium.

Philippines urged to "spare no effort" in solving murder of radio journalist

Authorities in the Philippines are being urged to "spare no effort" in arresting the persons who murdered a radio journalist last week.

The appeal is being made by the head of the UN cultural organization, UNESCO, who has condemned the murder of Cosme Diez Maestrado.

He was shot by unknown assailants on 27 August in Mindanao, in the south of the country.

Mr Maestrado had survived a previous assassination attempt two years ago, according to information provided by the UN agency.
