A meeting of world leaders at the UN over the coming week will provide a "major opportunity" to resolve conflicts in Syria and Yemen.

That's according to the US Secretary of State, John Kerry, following talks with Iran's Foreign Minister at the United Nations.

Daniel Dickinson has more details.

John Kerry met with his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Javad Zarif, ahead of the high-level meeting of the UN General Assembly which begins on Monday.

The 193 Member States of the UN will be discussing pertinent issues including the ongoing conflicts in Syria and Yemen.

Speaking alongside Mr Zarif, the US Secretary of State, said he was optimistic about the chances of peace.

"I view this week as a major opportunity for any number of countries to play an important role in trying to resolve some very difficult issues of the Middle East. We need to achieve peace and a way forward in Syria, in Yemen and in region itself. I think the opportunity this week through these discussions can make some progress."

It's expected around 150 heads of state will attend the annual high-level meeting, which concludes on Saturday.
