China has lifted 439 million of its citizens out of poverty and is poised to make critical advances on other development initiatives.

That's according to the President of China, who addressed a world summit at the UN following the adoption of the new global development goals.

More now from Veronica Reeves.

Chinese President Xi Jinping told the General Assembly that with the adoption of the new global development agenda, his country is on track to continue building on its Millennium Development Goal successes.

"China's development has not only improved the well-being of the 1.3 billion-plus Chinese people, but also given a strong boost to the global cause of development. Over the past 60-plus years, China has taken an active part in international development cooperation."

President Xi said that China is also looking to take a leading role in the development of other countries. China plans to establish a South-South cooperation fund and increase investment in developing countries, while also initiating a debt-forgiveness scheme for some of the world's poorest nations.
