World leaders are set to adopt the new global goals at a summit at the UN  in New York on Friday and children's well-being are being given particular attention.

Described as the "future custodians" of the planet, the needs and aspirations of children are expected to be at the core of future development efforts.

Veronica Reeves has the story.

UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson told participants at the "Children and the Sustainable Development Goals" event that everyone from government to civil society to the private sector have a role to play in ensuring the well-being of children.

Mr Eliasson said one needs to look no further than the dramatic and disturbing impact of conflict and violence on children to realize that more must be done.

"We have all been shocked, heartbroken and angry by the images of the recent refugee crisis. We need to be reminded both about our legal obligations and the demands of solidarity and compassion,"

Access to education and employment opportunities were highlighted as some of the other key areas of concern for the youth.
