Continued international engagement in Afghanistan is critical to avoid waves of people from leaving the country, the top UN official there has stated.

Nicholas Haysom, head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), says Afghans are counting on the support of the international community as they face ongoing security, economic and political challenges.

Mr Haysom is in New York to participate in high-level meetings during the annual UN General Assembly which begins next week. He has also briefed the Security Council.

Mr Haysom told Dianne Penn why Afghanistan deserves peace after three decades of conflict.
