Young people across the globe are being called on by the UN Secretary-General to demand and foster dramatic progress.

Ban Ki-moon said that as world leaders prepare to adopt a bold new vision for sustainable development in September, the engagement of youth is more valuable than ever.

Maria Carlino reports.

Young people are proving to be invaluable partners in creating a future where the planet is protected and all people live in dignity, according to the UN chief.

In a message Wednesday, on International Youth Day, he said young people are contributing fresh ideas and organizing through social media.

Mr Ban applauded youth for speaking out against injustice, and supported their call for steps to ensure human rights, economic progress and protection of the environment.

This year marks the third International Day of Youth and the 20th anniversary of the UN's World Programme of Action for Youth.
