Peace agreement signed to end “unspeakable violence” in South Sudan

South Sudan was the focus of global attention this week as President Salva Kiir on Wednesday signed a peace agreement aimed at bringing an end to nearly two years of fighting. This came one day after the UN Security Council held a briefing on the situation in the world's youngest nation. UN officials who addressed the Council expressed deep shock regarding what has been described as "utter disrespect for human life" and "unspeakable violence" by all parties to the conflict in the country. Stephanie Coutrix reports.

Widespread impunity in Darfur must stop: UN rights chief

The Sudanese government and armed opposition groups in the country are being urged by the UN to end widespread impunity of serious human rights violations in Darfur. A new report by the UN human rights office, OHCHR, says killings and rape in the strife-torn region last year have largely been dismissed by local police and underreported by victims due to a lack of trust in the authorities. Of the 411 cases of alleged abuse documented by the joint African Union-UN mission in the country, UNAMID, very few were investigated or resulted in arrests. The human rights agency says the report's findings paint a "grim picture" of a much broader pattern of violence. OHCHR spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani has been speaking to Maria Carlino.
