Libya talks enter final phase

Talks aimed at finalizing a political agreement in Libya began on Thursday, the UN mission for the country (UNSMIL) reports.

UNSMIL is facilitating the talks, which are being held in Morocco, and represent the final phase of seven months of dialogue.

Libya has been plagued by instability and factional fighting since the overthrow of President Muammar al-Qhadafi in 2011.

UN mission chief Bernardino León said it is up to leaders on all sides "to set aside their differences, put the supreme interest of their country before any other consideration and make that final push towards peace."

Launch of initiative to protect Ugandan wetlands

The launch of a major wetlands restorative initiative in Uganda has been backed by the UN Environment Programme, UNEP.

UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner has concluded a visit to the country where he met with President Yoweri Museveni and other top officials.

Mr Steiner also participated in the launch of the "Uganda Wetlands Atlas" which uses earth observation systems to analyse the country's wetlands ecosystems.

It is hoped the Atlas can be used to counter the negative impact climate change is having on the wetlands.

Mr Bowden said the UN has a long-term interest in aiding the government and people of Faryab.

According to the UN humanitarian agency, OCHA, the number of families displaced by conflict in the country's nine northern provinces has increased markedly to more than 5,300 families in recent months.
