UN chief takes note of inauguration of Burundi President for third term

The UN Secretary-General has taken note of the inauguration of Pierre Nkurunziza for his third term as President of Burundi.

In a statement, Ban Ki-moon said he was reiterating his call for all Burundian stakeholders to undertake an inclusive and transparent political dialogue.

He stressed that this is necessary to overcome existing deep political divisions.

Civil unrest in the Central African country was sparked after the President decided to run for, what was considered by many, an unconstitutional third term.

Belize lauded for joining Convention on Reduction of Statelessness

Belize's decision to join the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness has been welcomed by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

It is the second accession by a Caribbean Community, or CARICOM, member state.

UNHCR said this decision is an excellent sign that Belize is emerging as a regional champion on international protection.

According to the UN, at least 10 million people worldwide are currently stateless, and a child is born stateless every 10 minutes.

Latest prison sentencing of rights defenders in Azerbaijan "deeply distressing"

A group of UN human rights experts have condemned the recent prison sentencing of prominent Azerbaijani human rights activists.

Leyla and Arif Yunus were sentenced on 13 August to eight-and-a -half and seven years of imprisonment, respectively, on charges of fraud, tax evasion, and illegal entrepreneurship.

The UN experts described the sentencing as "politically motivated and representative of the continuing repression of independent civil society in Azerbaijan."
