UNICEF staff meet Central African girl, reported victim of rape

Staff from the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have met with a young girl in the Central African Republic who was reportedly raped by a UN police officer.

The head of UNICEF, Anthony Lake, said the agency is providing her with what he called "every possible help," including medical assistance and psychological support.

He added that while respecting the integrity of the investigation into the incident, it is clear that this child has endured what he described as "a most brutal ordeal".

The announcement follows action at the highest levels of the UN after allegations of sexual abuse by UN peacekeepers serving in the Central African Republic were revealed by the human rights group Amnesty International.

Iran urged to released Washington Post journalist

The Iranian government has been urged by UN human rights experts to immediately release the Washington Post's correspondent in Tehran, Jason Rezaian.

The journalist is currently awaiting verdict after his fourth and possible final hearing last week.

The independent experts said the arrest, detention and secret trial of Mr Rezaian violate his rights and intimidate all those working in the media in Iran.

Iranian authorities detained Mr Rezaian and his wife, Yeganeh Salehi, over a year ago, though she was subsequently released.
