Iraqi anti-corruption reforms to bolster national unity

Proposed reforms in Iraq aimed at streamlining state institutions and stamping out corruption will strengthen national unity and accelerate reconciliation, according to a senior UN official in the country.

Gyorgy Busztin, deputy head at the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), has welcomed the reform plan which was unanimously approved by parliament on Tuesday.

He pointed out that corruption and inefficiency create  what he called "widespread and rightful dissatisfaction" which terrorists could manipulate for their own purposes.

Brazil urged to halt indigenous evictions

The Brazilian government is being urged not to evict indigenous people from their traditional lands.

The call comes from Victoria Tauli-Corpuz, a UN independent human rights expert.

This follows reports that two indigenous groups—the Guarani and the Kaiowá—are to be forcibly removed from ancestral territory in western Brazil which is now mostly under the control of non-indigenous individuals.

Ms Tauli-Corpuz said relocation should not take place without the free, prior and informed consent of the two peoples.

Humanitarian Fund contributes US$13.2 million to Central African Republic

Local and international aid agencies in the Central African Republic (CAR) will receive US$13.2 million to support life-saving assistance for people displaced by violence.

The allocation from the UN Common Humanitarian Fund will be used in areas such as the delivery of clean water and sanitation, camp management for internally displaced people, and education, health care and nutrition.

Two years of fighting between Christian and Muslim communities in the CAR have forced more than 800,000 people to flee their homes, half of whom are now refugees in neighbouring countries.

The UN estimates 2.7 million people in the CAR are in direct need of humanitarian assistance.
