Nearly a quarter of a million people in Central America are receiving food aid from the UN following what the World Food Programme (WFP) has called an "extended drought."

WFP said that vulnerable communities in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua have resorted to what it described as "negative coping strategies."

Those strategies include reducing health and education expenditures, consuming seed reserves, selling land and begging.

The UN agency has appealed for an additional US$10 million to fund its operations in the region.
