10,000 people flee terror group in Chad

An estimated 10,000 people have fled their homes in western Chad following the fear of attacks by the Boko Haram terrorist group; that's according to the UN.

The Government of Chad has also asked civilians to leave areas where ongoing military operations are being undertaken against the group.

Here's the UN Spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric.

"On August 3rd, an estimated 10,000 people fled to the locality of Koulkimé, some 20 kilometres from the town of Baga Sola, in the Lac Region of Chad, bringing the total of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the region to around 40,000. Overall, some 79,000 civilians have been forced to flee their homes since the beginning of the year."

400 saved from stricken ship off Libyan coast

Almost 400 refugees and migrants have been rescued from a vessel which sank off Libya while attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has confirmed.

The agency said that the bodies of 25 people had been recovered, but dozens more were still missing and feared dead.

Some 2,100 people have died so far this year trying to cross the Mediterranean to reach Europe.

Humanitarian support boosted in flood-hit Myanmar

Aid agencies have been stepping up the delivery of relief assistance to communities in Myanmar hit by widespread flooding, the UN has said.

More than 330,000 people have been affected, 88 people have died, and more than 217,000 acres of farmland have been destroyed, according to the UN humanitarian office, OCHA.

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) said the loss of homes, crops and food and seed stocks will have a serious impact on food security in the Asian country.
