"Prioritize human dimensions" of Calais migrants

The well-being of migrants who are camped at the French port city of Calais, has to be prioritized, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Up to 5,000 migrants are currently waiting in Calais, many of whom are trying to cross over to the United Kingdom.

The UN partner organization said that the "human dimensions" of the situation must be made a priority as France and the UK deal with security concerns and the disruption of tourism and commerce.

China boosts tourism as tool to fight poverty

A decision by China to promote rural tourism as an effective means to fight poverty has been welcomed by the UN World Tourism Organization (WTO).

Data from Chinese authorities show that between 2011 and 2014, more than 10 million people, or 10 per cent of the poverty-stricken population, were lifted out of poverty through tourism.

China has announced a nationwide tourism development plan to lift an additional 17 per cent of the country's population out of poverty by 2020.

Search on for "champions" of disaster risk reduction

A global search for communities that use local knowledge to manage disaster risk has been launched by the UN.

The Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) said it wants to draw attention to the importance of local knowledge, traditions and customs in the struggle against extreme weather events, climate change and earthquakes.

Over 19 million people from communities across the world were newly displaced by disasters in 2014.

The first communities to be designated as Champions of Disaster Risk Reduction will be announced in October.
