A deadly truck bombing at a market in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, on Thursday has been condemned as "heinous and cowardly" by a senior UN official in the country.

Gyorgy Busztin, acting chief at the UN mission in Iraq, UNAMI, called for the perpetrators to be swiftly brought to justice.

Dianne Penn reports.

More than 60 people reportedly were killed in the blast at the Jameela market in Sadr City, located in the eastern part of Baghdad.

The terrorist group ISIL has reportedly claimed responsibility.

Mr Busztin, the deputy chief at the UN mission, called the attack "an indiscriminate act of terrorism aimed at weakening the resolve of the Iraqi people."

The UN official said he had "no doubt" that the terrorists will fail.
