North Korea the focus of new UN rights hub in Seoul

Millions of people in North Korea also known as the DPRK face “appalling suffering” that’s to be the focus of a new UN field office based over the border in South Korea. Marking the opening of the office in the South Korean capital, Seoul, the UN Human Rights Commissioner Zeid Ra’ad al Hussein said it would stand for the rights of North Koreans. He said they have endured “cruelty of such magnitude…that almost defied human understanding”. But as UN human rights office spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani told Daniel Johnson, the opening hasn’t been well received by the DPRK.

Changing face of food insecurity in Europe and Central Asia

The Central Asia and Europe region is a front-runner in the race to end hunger, but it still struggles with malnutrition. That's according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization's first-ever report on food insecurity in the region's 53 countries. FAO says food insecurity in these countries is no longer so much about getting enough calories, it's the quality of peoples' diets. To find out more about these trends, Sandra Ferrari spoke with David Sedik, a senior FAO policy officer, who is based in Budapest, Hungary. She began by asking him for a historical perspective on the prevalence of undernourishment in Central Asia and Europe.

The use of heroin and synthetic drugs are on the rise in Asia according to a new report released by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). The 2015 World Drug Report shows that Afghanistan is the major producer of heroin around the world, producing 85 per cent of opiates. Myanmar is the second largest producer. To find out more about the biggest drug issues in Asia, Stephanie Coutrix spoke with Angela Me  from UNODC in Vienna. She began by asking her to describe the continent's biggest challenges.
