UN Humanitarian Coordinator makes the case for peace in South Sudan

South Sudan's leaders have been urged by the UN Humanitarian Affairs chief to pursue peace and to allow aid workers to perform their tasks in safety. Stephen O'Brien recently visited a UN-run camp in the town of Bentiu, in Unity State, where up to 1,000 people are arriving each day to escape ongoing violence.  Nearly two years of fighting between government forces and those loyal to the former vice president has forced more than two million people in South Sudan to flee their homes. Jacob Raui spoke to Mr O'Brien who said it was important that displaced people feel safe and protected.

Namibian eye doctor honoured for fighting blindness

An eye doctor from Namibia who has provided no-cost treatment to more than 30,000 people is a recipient of the first United Nations Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela Prize. Dr Helena Ndume originally wanted to be a fashion designer but switched to ophthalmology because her country had a greater need for doctors. The prize, which is named after South Africa's first democratically elected leader, honours one man and one woman who have dedicated their lives to serving others. Jorge Sampaio, a former president of Portugal, is also a recipient. Dr Ndume spoke to Ruth Fertig about her fight against blindness.
