UN envoy meets with congressmen and armed groups in Libya

The UN Special Representative in Libya, Bernardino León, has met with a delegation from Azzawiya, a port city in the northwest, to discuss the next steps in the country's political dialogue.

Members of the House of Representatives, the municipality and revolutionaries have stressed their full support for the Libyan political agreement, and their readiness to help implement it.

During the meeting, the UN envoy welcomed local ceasefire and reconciliation accords in western Libya.

More countries joining international agreement to combat illegal fishing

A growing number of countries are ratifying an international agreement to combat illegal fishing, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

FAO says so far 12 countries have ratified the accord, which was brokered by the food agency in 2009, and two more are expected to join soon.

The agreement promotes collaboration to end illegal fishing, which causes economic damage and undermines the way fish stocks are managed.

Here's UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric.

"According to FAO, illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing is estimated to strip between $10 billion and $23 billion from the global economy. It may account for up to 26 million tonnes of seafood a year – more than 15 percent of the [total] global output."

UN Panel highlights anti-violence law in Afghanistan

Afghanistan's law to end violence against women should lead to greater protection for women and legal action against perpetrators, male experts at a UN-sponsored event in Kandahar have said.

The panel brought together men from civil society, the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission and the country's judiciary as part of ongoing efforts to promote women's rights.

The participants said civil society and women's rights group, religious leaders and intellectuals have a duty to raise awareness about the 2009 law and to remove the misconception that it is against Islam.
