Cholera deaths in South Sudan reach 39

More than 1,200 cholera cases, including 39 deaths, have been reported in South Sudan, the World Health Organization (WHO) has said.

Health care providers have responded to the outbreak by setting up cholera treatment centres and oral rehydration points in the two affected counties, Juba and Bor.

On Wednesday, the Under Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Stephen O'Brien, is scheduled to arrive in the country on a four-day visit.

He will assess the humanitarian consequences of the conflict between government and rebel forces which broke out in December 2013.

Syria envoy continues shuttle diplomacy

The UN Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, is continuing diplomatic efforts to find a political solution to the conflict in the country.

More than 220,000 Syrians have died and close to 12 million have been forced to flee their homes as fighting continues between the government and various dissident factions.

Mr de Mistura has been meeting with senior ministers of the Iranian government in Tehran as he prepares to update the UN Security Council.

Here's the Deputy Spokesperson of the UN, Farhan Haq.

"The Special Envoy is working to finalize his proposals to the Secretary-General on a way forward to support Syrian parties in their search of a political solution to the conflict, in preparation for a briefing to the Security Council next week."

African countries focus on disaster risk implementation

Forty-eight African countries have gathered in the Cameroonian capital Yaoundé to push ahead the implementation of the UN's Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.

The Sendai Framework which was agreed by the international community earlier this year aims to reduce the social, environmental and economic impact of disasters.

The three–day meeting in Cameroon is focused on African countries aligning their disaster risk management strategies.
