Immediate action needed to prevent Burundi from sliding back into conflict

The UN Security Council has been urged by United Nation human rights experts to take immediate action to prevent Burundi from sliding back into violent conflict ahead of presidential elections.

The experts said this could cause a crisis which will affect other countries in the region, including Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Since the Burundian President’s announcement in April that he would be running for a third term, more than 140,000 Burundians have fled to escape political violence.

Return of displaced Central Africans welcomed by UN

The return of displaced people to Kadéi prefecture in the west of the Central African Republic has been welcomed by the UN Mission in the country, MINUSCA.

The head of the Mission, Babacar Gaye, said that it is sending a strong message to those who work to promote national reconciliation and social cohesion.

The Central African Republic has endured more than two years of sectarian violence between Muslim and Christian militias.

Bahrain urged to drop charged against human rights defender

Bahraini authorities have been called on by UN human rights experts to drop all charges against a Bahraini human rights defender who was released from prison earlier this week for health reasons.

The experts called Nabeel Rajab's release "only a half measure", given that he is still facing charges that carry up to fifteen years of imprisonment.

Mr Rajab, who is the president of the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights, was jailed in October 2014 in connection with statements made on his Twitter account.
