UN refugee agency shocked by Thailand's deportation of ethnic minority

Thailand's decision to deport some 100 members of an ethnic minority to China has been labelled "a flagrant violation of international law" by the UN refugee agency (UNHCR).

The people, who are of Turkic origin, were reportedly flown out of the country early on Thursday despite their objections, according to the agency.

The Turkic peoples are an ethnic group who live in several regions of Asia, as well as in north-western China and parts of eastern Europe.

UNHCR urged the Thai authorities to refrain from such deportations in the future.
