Scores of displaced South Sudanese sheltering at UN sites

More than 150,000 people are sheltering at UN protection sites around South Sudan, according to the UN Humanitarian Affairs Office (OCHA).

This figure includes nearly 40,000 people who have fled to a location in Bentiu, a town in the north of the country, since violence broke out there in April.

Their arrival brings the total number of people at that particular site to more than 90,000.

Humanitarian agencies are scaling up operations in South Sudan to meet the needs of the increasing number of displaced people.

Human Rights chief concerned about China's "vague" new national security law

A new national security law in China is too broad and vague, and opens the door to further restrictions on people's rights and freedoms, according to the UN Human Rights High Commissioner.

The law was adopted this month and covers numerous issues including environment, defence, finance, information technology, education and religion.

UN human rights chief  Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein is concerned that it could result in even tighter control of civil society than there is already.

Development financing conference outcome to be universally inclusive

Increased aid for the world's least developed countries and a commitment to establishing a technology bank for these nations are some of the expected outcomes of an upcoming global conference on development financing.

The head of the UN's Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Wu Hongbo, will serve as conference secretary.

"The conference will set a framework for financing sustainable development over the next 15 years. The outcome will be a comprehensive package in support of the Sustainable Development Goals to be adopted in September. The framework will be ambitious and universally inclusive. No one should be left behind."

More than 50 heads of state and government are expected to attend the Third International Conference on Financing for Development to be held next week in Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa.
