Efforts to kick-start talks on ridding the world of weapons of mass destruction have begun in Geneva, with a call for an end to the "stalemate" that's bogged down disarmament discussions for decades.

The call for action came from the UN’s Acting High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Kim Won-soo.

Kim echoed repeated entreaties from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to the Conference On Disarmament (COD) "to return to work" on the key issues of disarmament and non-proliferation.
