Presidential elections in Burundi have complicated the political crisis in the Great Lakes country, according to a senior United Nations official in the region.

Burundi has been in political turmoil ever since the incumbent President decided to run for a third term.

An estimated 144,000 people have left the country since pre-election violence began in April.

Tsigue Shiferaw has been speaking to Abdoulaye Bathily, the head of UNOCA, the United Nations political office tasked with helping to consolidate peace and prevent conflict in the Central African region.

She began by asking him for his assessment of the situation there following Tuesday's vote.
