The overall environment during presidential elections in Burundi was not conducive to an inclusive, free and credible electoral process, according to the UN Electoral Observation Mission in the country (MENUB).

On Monday, the mission presented its preliminary conclusions on the conduct of the 21 July elections which took place after being postponed twice.

In April, the decision of the incumbent President to run for another term led to widespread violence which forced an estimated 144,000 people to flee their homes.

On Election Day, Burundians in most places went peacefully to the polls to cast their ballots, the UN Electoral Observation Mission in Burundi reported on Monday.

But it underlined that essential conditions surrounding the right to vote, such as freedom of expression and assembly, remained severely impaired.

Here's UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric with more on MENUB's conclusions.

"In its preliminary conclusions, the Mission says that while Election Day was relatively peaceful and conducted adequately, the overall environment was not conducive for an inclusive, free and credible election process. It says that Burundians in most places went peacefully to the polls to cast their ballots. But the UN Observation Mission also notes the environment of profound mistrust between opposing political camps and that the parties did not reach agreement on a consensual electoral calendar."

The conclusions also found that despite four candidates having declared their withdrawal from the presidential race, their names still remained on the ballot.
