Better understanding of way forward for Iran nuclear deal

A "better understanding" of the way forward to secure a deal on Iran's use of nuclear technology is emerging according to the Director General of the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Yukiya Amano was in the Iranian capital, Teheran on Thursday to meet President Hassan Rouhani.

He said he sought clarification of the possible military uses of the technology.

Iran has said its nuclear programme is for purely peaceful purposes.

Cooperatives strive to uphold the principles of equality and democracy

Cooperatives strive to uphold the principles of equality and democratic participation.

That's according to the UN Secretary-General speaking ahead of the International Day of Cooperatives celebrated annually on July 4th.

Ban Ki-moon said the cooperative business model helps to overcome inequality, which he described as a fundamental obstacle to development.

The UN estimates that there are 2.6 million cooperatives around the world employing 12.6 million people.

Caribbean youth "torchbearers for today"

The UN Secretary-General has told young people in the Caribbean region that they are not just future leaders but the torchbearers for today.

Ban Ki-moon was speaking to youth leaders at the University of the West Indies in Bridgetown, Barbados where he's currently on a visit.

One-fifth of the Caribbean population is between the ages of 15 to 24.

Mr Ban said young people have an important role to play in the future of the planet, especially on climate change and sustainable development issues.
