UN Calling Asia: focus on cost of child abuse, E-waste and Food Price Index

Child abuse costing East Asia and Pacific US$209bn

Child abuse and violence is costing countries in East Asia and the Pacific around $US209 billion a year, according to the UN Children's Fund, UNICEF. It's the first ever costing of child maltreatment in the region. UNICEF says it will use the findings to take action with governments to reduce the abuse of young people. Daniel Dickinson asked Andrew Brown, who's based in Bangkok, Thailand for UNICEF where the maltreatment is taking place.

Up to 90 per cent of the world’s electronic or E-waste, worth nearly US$19 billion, is illegally traded or dumped each year, according to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). In Asia, China, Hong Kong, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Viet Nam appear to bear the brunt of illegal E-waste shipments. Organised crime syndicates are also becoming more involved in the illegal trade as regulators look at measures to stop it. Christian Nellemann is a senior officer with GRID in Norway, a UN partner organization. Cathrine Hasselberg asked him about the issues concerning the dumping of E-waste.

The price of food commodities fell in May hitting the lowest level since September 2009, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization, FAO. The UN agency's Food Price Index averaged almost 167 points in May, down 1.4 per cent from April and as much as 20.7 percent from a year earlier. The index is a measure of the monthly change of a range of major food commodities, including cereals, sugar, vegetable oil and dairy. Despite its overall downward trend, the vegetable oil price index rose 2.6 per cent, partly driven by climate issues that could affect production in Southeast Asia. Sandra Ferrari asked Concepción Calpe, a senior economist with FAO, to interpret this month's figures.
