Improved relations between Pakistan and India stressed by UN chief

The need for improved relations between Pakistan and India was stressed by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday.

The UN chief met with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif of Pakistan on the margins of the international water conference under way in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.

The Secretary-General also underlined the importance of addressing the root causes on the issue of countering terrorism.

Global community urged to develop safer and regular migration

The international community has been urged to develop safer and more regular migration pathways for people who risk their lives to get to other countries.

The appeal has been made by the UN Secretary-General in a message to the Special Session of the Maritime Safety Committee of the International Maritime Organization.

Stéphane Dujarric is the Secretary-General's Spokesperson.

"In a video message to the Special Session of the International Maritime Organization's Maritime Safety Committee, the Secretary-General said that shipping and maritime rescue services are close to being overwhelmed due to the unprecedented increase in people risking their lives at sea, fleeing war, famine, poverty and human rights abuses."

UN nuclear watchdog agency experts conclude mission to Ghana

A team of experts from the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have concluded a ten-day mission to Ghana.

They were in the West African country to review its emergency preparedness and response arrangements.

The IAEA says the mission was conducted at the request of the Government of Ghana.
