2014 unprecedented year for children in countries impacted armed conflicts

The year 2014 saw unprecedented challenges for the protection of tens of millions of children growing up in countries impacted by conflict.

That's according to a report of the UN Secretary-General on Children and Armed Conflict which was received by Member States on Monday.

Stephane Dujarric is the Secretary-General's Spokesperson in New York.

"This is especially true in several situations affected by major crises, namely, the in Central African Republic, Iraq, Israel and State of Palestine, Nigeria, South Sudan, and the Syrian Arab Republic – which were exposed to the most egregious violations." (15")

Renewed aerial bombing in Syria's Idlib province condemned by UN envoy

Renewed bombing from Syrian government aircrafts using barrel bombs in a town in Syria's Idlib province has been condemned by the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for the country.

Staffan de Misturra said all evidence shows that the use of indiscriminate aerial weapons is responsible for the overwhelming majority of civilian deaths and injuries.

That, he added, is totally unacceptable and stressed that the protection of civilians during armed conflicts is a cornerstone of international humanitarian law that applies in all circumstances without distinction.

Head of UN humanitarian says more needs to be done for all Iraqis

More needs to be done for all the people in Iraq affected by the ongoing conflict, according to the head of the UN humanitarian office (OCHA).

Stephen O'Brien spoke in Baghdad where he met with government officials as well as people from Anbar and Salah al Din Governorates who remain displaced in the capital.

On Tuesday, the UN envoy is expected to visit Erbil to meet with Kurdistan regional officials and families who have fled violence and sought refuge in the region in the past year.
