UN mission chief meets with armed groups in western Libya

The head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has met with representatives of armed groups operating in the western part of the country as part of efforts to promote national dialogue.

Bernardino Leon said cooperation of the armed groups is crucial to restoring peace and stability in the country.

Other meetings are being planned in other regions of Libya in the coming days.

UN and partners sign agreement to help Sahel communities

Millions of people in the drought-stricken Sahel region of West Africa are getting assistance to cope with climate shocks and natural and manmade disasters.

Several UN agencies and 13 West African countries have signed a two-year agreement to help them build resilience in the face of challenges such as chronic food crises, violent conflicts and displacement.

The Sahel is home to some of the world's poorest communities with more than 20 million people facing food insecurity.

UNESCO chief deplores killing of journalist in Ukraine

The killing of a Ukrainian newspaper photographer earlier this year has been condemned by the head of the UN cultural organization (UNESCO).

Irina Bokova has issued a statement saying she deplored the death of Sergii Nikolaiev who was killed in an artillery attack in eastern Ukraine in late February.

She called on all in Ukraine to ensure the safety of those who work in the media there.
