Destruction of historic buildings in Yemeni capital condemned

The destruction of historic buildings in the capital of Yemen, Sana'a, has been condemned by UNESCO.

The UN cultural agency said that early on Friday, the Old City of Sana'a, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was hit by a bombing raid.

Several houses and historic buildings were destroyed, causing human casualties.

Irina Bokova, the agency's Director General said she was "profoundly distressed by the loss of human lives" and the damage inflicted on what she called one of the "world's oldest jewels of Islamic urban landscape."

Summer study programme launched for children in Gaza

An annual educational program to help Palestinian school children who have failed Arabic and Mathematics has started in the Gaza Strip, the UN has announced.

The Summer Learning Program which is organised by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, prepares youngsters for exams they need to pass to move to the next grade level.

This year, over 25,000 students are taking the classes in Gaza.

UNRWA operates 252 schools for about 240,000 Palestine refugee students.

Meteorologists agree priorities for new global development agenda

Meteorologists from around the world have agreed their priorities for the new global development agenda.

The Sustainable Development Goals are to be finalized by the international community in September this year and will replace the anti-poverty Millennium Development goals or MDGs.

Meeting in Geneva, the UN World Meteorological Organization said it would focus on disaster risk reduction, climate services to help climate change adaptation and sustainable development as well as the research and monitoring of polar and high mountain regions.

It also envisages a more cross-cutting urban focus and greater emphasis on marine weather activities.
