Pope Francis says access to food is "a right of all people"

The international community has been urged by Pope Francis to ensure that everyone has access to basic foods.

The leader of the Roman Catholic Church spoke to the delegates attending the 39th Conference of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) during a special session at the Vatican on Thursday.

The pontiff expressed concern about statistics that show that one third of all food produced on the planet is lost or wasted.

He called for commitment to modify lifestyles and use natural resources in a more sustainable manner.

UN envoy steps down as facilitator for dialogue in Burundi

The UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for the Great Lakes region, Said Djinnit has stepped down as facilitator for the dialogue in Burundi.

The African country has been facing instability sparked by President Pierre Nkurunziza's decision to run for a third term in office.

UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric says Mr Djinnit will remain as Special Envoy for the region.

"We will consult with leaders of the Great Lakes Region, the African Union Commission, the East African Community as well as the International Conference on the Great Lakes to see how best the United Nations can continue supporting international efforts to encourage political dialogue among Burundian stakeholders." Low Enriched Uranium Bank to be established in Kazakhstan

A Low Enriched Uranium (LEU) Bank is to be established by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the UN nuclear watchdog has announced.

The Board of Governors of the agency approved the accord for the establishment of the Bank on Thursday.

The Bank will ensure that Member States have access to Low Enriched Uranium in case they cannot obtain it on global commercial markets, through State-to-State arrangements or through other means.
