Egypt's decision to open Rafah crossing welcomed by UN envoy

Egypt's decision to open the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt for three days has been welcomed by the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Nickolay Mladenov.

The opening of the crossing, this Saturday, followed consultations between Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and the Egyptian authorities.

Mr Mladenov expressed the hope that the security conditions would allow for the decision to be extended and that Rafah can be open on a regular basis.

He added that a permanent end to the suffering of the Palestinian people can only be achieved through an end to the Israeli occupation and the realization of the two-state solution in which Gaza is an integral part of the Palestinian state.

Kuwait's $300 million donation for Iraq and Yemen welcomed by UN

A donation of $300 million by Kuwait to help people in need in Iraq and Yemen has been welcomed by the UN humanitarian office (OCHA).

$200 million will be put towards alleviating the suffering of people in Iraq and $100 million to help the people in Yemen.

OCHA described Kuwait's decision as "testament to the increasing role" the Gulf country is playing in supporting humanitarian work across the world.

Attack on historic Karnak temple in Egypt condemned by UNESCO chief

An attempt to attack the historic Karnak temple near Luxor in Egypt has been condemned by Irina Bokova, the head of the UN cultural agency (UNESCO).

According to reports, three men including a suicide bomber tried to attack the temple which is one of the country's most popular tourist sites.

The attempt on Wednesday was thwarted by Egyptian police.

Ms Bokova said the temple, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a symbol of Egyptian civilization.
