Mission assesses MERS outbreak in South Korea

A joint mission of the World Health Organization and South Korea's Ministry of Health and Welfare has begun to assess the outbreak of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) in the country.

There are 107 confirmed cases of MERS reported in the Republic of Korea, and one in China.

Nine people have died of the disease which was reportedly introduced by a man who was infected during a business trip to Saudi Arabia.

Role of Outer Space in sustainable development discussed

The role of space in meeting the challenges of sustainable development and climate change is the focus of the discussions of a United Nations committee dealing with outer space.

The UN Committee on Peaceful Uses of Outer Spaces began its 58th session in Vienna, Austria on Wednesday.

The Committee will, for the first time, also consider transparency and confidence-building measures in outer space activities, how they relate to the safety of space operations and the long-term sustainability of outer space activities.

AU, Thailand, magazine and NGO get award for fighting hunger

Four winners of awards for their efforts to reduce hunger and raise awareness of the challenges facing the world's food systems were announced by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on Wednesday.

They are the African Union Commission, Thailand's Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, National Geographic Magazine and the non-profit World Rural Forum.

The awards will be formally handed over in November during celebrations of the 70th anniversary of FAO.
