Women's empowerment through menstrual health

In many developing countries, millions of girls and women are left to manage their menstrual cycles with whatever they can find, such as cloth, paper or clay; that's according to the UN. When you add a lack of access to water and soap, the programme manager for the UN's Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council, says that women's health could be put at risk. Archana Patkar was participating in a panel debate on menstrual health at UN headquarters in New York, where she highlighted the importance of breaking the silence on the subject. Cathrine Hasselberg spoke with Ms Patkar about some of the issues surrounding menstrual health.

Family planning reaches into mountains of Laos

An increasing number of women in the mountainous South-East Asian country of Laos are accessing family planning services for the first time, thanks to a programme supported by the UN Population Fund, UNFPA. Around 70 per cent of the population lives in rural and remote areas, so women have typically found it difficult to obtain contraceptives and reproductive counselling. Community-based distribution workers are now reaching those in need, as Pat Duffy reports.

Women's political participation boosted in rural China

Women's political participation is a fundamental prerequisite for gender equality in Asia and across the world, according to the UN body dedicated to women's empowerment. Female workers make up more than 70 per cent of the rural labour force in China, yet they only constitute 21 per cent of village committee members. UN Women is working with the All-China Women's Federation on how to support those workers to become part of local decision making processes. Cathrine Hasselberg asked the Country Programme Manager for UN Women in China, Julie Brossard, about how the agency is reaching women in rural areas.
