Lives saved in Nepal thanks to collaborative rescue operations

The search and rescue operations in Nepal, deployed after an earthquake hit the country on 25 April, saved many lives thanks to a collaborative approach between local Nepali and international groups, according to a senior disaster relief official. The teams working to free victims from fallen infrastructure were guided by the UN Disaster Assessment and Coordination team (UNDAC). Dewey Perks works for the United States Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance, and is responsible for coordinating US teams abroad. Fabrice Robinet spoke with him on the line from Nepal as foreign teams begin to leave the country now that search and rescue operations are over. He shared his personal experience rescuing people from the rubble.

Nuclear safety issues under spotlight at UN

Nuclear experts have been meeting to look at ways of improving the safety of nuclear power plants. The UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency has been focussing on how to improve the response to a possible nuclear accident. It follows the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant in Japan in 2011. More than 100,000 people were evacuated from the areas surrounding the facility as a result of concerns over exposure to radioactive elements released from damaged reactors. Steve Thachet reports.

Soil related issues need more attention in Asia and the Pacific

Issues related to soil are not getting enough attention in Asia and the Pacific, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The agency says the most critical concerns the region faces are land scarcity particularly in East Asia, and contamination by chemical fertilizers. Yuji Niino is a soils officer for FAO based at the regional office in Thailand's capital, Bangkok. Sandra Ferrari began by asking him how well the soils are preserved in Asia and the Pacific.
