The situation on the ground in Mali is very tense while the UN awaits the signing of a peace agreement, according to the Force Commander of the UN Mission in the country, MINUSMA.

Major General Michael Lollesgaard was appointed in March to serve in the West African country, where a coup d’état in early 2012 continues to breed instability and violence.

The Major General says his primary role is to command the UN's peacekeeping force in Mali, but he is also chairman of a committee that is overseeing a ceasefire agreement.

Helene Papper spoke with Force Commander Lollesgaard and began by asking him to describe his role within the UN's peacekeeping mission.
