Colombian parties urged to listen to voices of women

All Colombian parties engaged in the peace dialogue to end over fifty years of armed conflict have been urged to listen to the voices of women.

The call has been made by Zainab Bangura, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, following her visit to Cuba this week.

Delegations of the government of Colombia and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) have been holding talks in the Caribbean country to try to end over 50 years of conflict.

UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric says Ms Bangura called on the parties to put the protection and empowerment of women at the heart of the discussions.

"She also urged them to do everything possible to ensure that the gains that have been made at the peace table are not lost."

Over four million people face acute hunger in next three months

About 4.6 million people or 40 per cent of the population of South Sudan face acute hunger in the next three months, the World Food Programme (WFP) warned on Wednesday.

The agency says unrelenting conflict and the onset of the lean season are intensifying alarming levels of hunger.

WFP says that there is a funding shortfall of US $230 million for food and nutrition assistance.

Unemployment among Palestinians up by over 25 per cent

The total number of unemployed Palestinians rose by more than 25 per cent in 2014 compared to the previous year, according to the International Labour Organization (ILO).

In its annual report on the situation of workers in the occupied territories, the ILO says there are more than 330,000 unemployed Palestinians.

A stalled peace process, high tensions and the effects of last year's war between Israeli and Hamas forces in Gaza have been cited as contributing factors to further economic and labour market decline for the Palestinian economy.
