Sudan urged to facilitate return of internally displaced persons

The government of Sudan has been urged to create conditions for the people displaced by conflict between government and rebel forces in Darfur to return home.

The call has come from the newly appointed UN Independent Expert on the situation of human rights in the Sudan, Aristide Nononsi, who has recently visited camps for internally displaced people in North and South Darfur states.

He said most of the internally displaced persons have expressed their willingness to return to their homeland if there is an improvement in the security situation.

UN reiterates call for calm in Burundi

A call for calm in Burundi has been reiterated by the United Nations in the aftermath of violence sparked by the decision by the President to stand for re-election for a third term.

The consultative political dialogue was suspended on Sunday at the request of political parties following the killing of an opposition leader.

"We of course reiterate our calls for calm and restraint, and we call on the Burundian authorities to uphold the human rights of all Burundians and to take concrete steps to prevent political killings and further violence." (11")

European Parliament "a pillar of international cooperation for peace"

The European Parliament has been described by the UN Secretary-General as "a pillar of international cooperation for peace, development and human rights".

Speaking in Brussels on Wednesday, Ban Ki-moon said the EU Parliament which represents a wide diversity of cultures and traditions plays an important role across every aspect of the United Nations.

Mr Ban highlighted preventing violent extremism, addressing the migration challenge and building a sustainable world for all as the three key challenges that must be addressed.
