Mali agreement "strong basis" for lasting peace

An agreement signed in Mali between armed groups and the Government is a "strong basis" for lasting peace in the country, the UN Secretary-General has said.

A coup d’état in early 2012 has continued to breed instability and violence in the West African country.

Ban Ki-moon welcomed the signature of the Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation in Mali saying it was an important step on the path towards sustainable peace.

UN condemns settlement activity by Israel

The continued development of settlements by the Israeli authorities in the occupied West Bank has been criticised by the UN chief.

Development has continued on three occasions over the past three consecutive weeks, in East Jerusalem and elsewhere.

The settlements are illegal under international law.

Ban Ki-moon has urged the Government of Israel to halt all activities related to developing the settlements.

International Agency for Research on Cancer marks 50th anniversary

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the specialized cancer agency of the World Health Organization, is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its establishment.

It's marking the occasion with the launch of a book which charts its efforts over the years to tackle cancer.

The book also describes the origin and development of IARC's main research, which has led to major breakthroughs in understanding the causes of cancer and how to prevent the disease.

"Men in Charge?" focus of International Day of Families

The International Day of Families, marked every 15 May, is being celebrated under the theme "Men in Charge?"

The UN says it aims to highlight the importance of gender equality and children's rights in contemporary families.

In a message, the UN chief said the global community should resolve to change legal and social norms that support male control over women and prevent the elimination of violence against vulnerable family members.
