UN chief attends WWII "Victory Day" celebrations in Russia

Commemorations marking the 70th anniversary of World War II continued over the weekend with a "Victory Day" celebration in the Russian Federation, where the UN Secretary-General met with the Russian President.

Ban Ki-moon expressed his appreciation for the invitation to commemorate the sacrifice and contribution of millions of people.

The UN chief and President Putin discussed the way forward on Ukraine, agreeing that full implementation by all sides of a package of measures adopted in Minsk in February presents the best opportunity to peace.

The two men also discussed the political process on Syria, Russia’s contribution to peacekeeping and climate change.

Arrival of ship carrying fuel chartered by WFP in Yemen

A ship carrying fuel chartered by the UN World Food Programme (WFP) arrived in Yemen on Sunday, opening up a new humanitarian lifeline for civilians impacted by conflict.

All humanitarian operations in the country had ground to a halt because of a shortage of fuel as fighting continues and rebels attempt to take control.

WFP says this breakthrough for UN humanitarian operations will allow them to reach hundreds of thousands of people in need of urgent food assistance.

Measles and polio vaccination campaign launched in Djibouti

An immunization campaign is underway in Djibouti to vaccinate 250,000 children against measles and 125,000 against polio.

The campaign is being led by the Djibouti Ministry of Health, supported by UNICEF, WHO, GAVI Alliance, the Measles and Rubella Initiative and the Government of Japan.

Vaccination teams will be stationed in different places including schools.
