"Alarming" surge in Bay of Bengal crossings

The number of migrants crossing the Bay of Bengal in South-East Asia has almost doubled over the past year, according to a new report from the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR.

The report documents what it calls an alarming rise in the number of Bangladeshis  and people from the Rohingya ethnic group, being smuggled to Thailand and Malaysia.

Adrian Edwards is a Spokesperson for UNHCR.

"Smuggling networks by sea across the Bay of Bengal are to Thailand and onto Malaysia have become increasingly lucrative for smugglers and increasingly dangerous and pernicious to their human cargoes."

Relief effort in Nepal focussing on remote areas

Relief teams in Nepal are focusing on reaching people in remote areas, who were affected by the recent earthquake.

The senior UN official in the country, Jamie McGoldrick said humanitarian agencies are reaching out to impacted communities ahead of the forthcoming monsoon season.

Here's the UN Spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric.

"Mr. McGoldrick said that improved airlift capacity and the decentralization of logistical support to five hubs was helping to speed up the flow of relief goods. Some relief teams are travelling on foot to impacted areas while goods are being dropped off at agreed locations with communities so they can be picked up."

Unemployment for Palestine refugees reaches 44 per cent

The unemployment rate for Palestinian refugees in the Gaza strip has reached 44 per cent.

Releasing the figure, UNWRA, the UN agency which supports people living in the coastal enclave, said that low employment has made it one of the world's most unstable economies.

In one instance, more than 27,000 people applied for some 200 teaching jobs.
