The Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) can be used as a driver of innovation around the world.

That's the message from the UN on World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) marked annually on May 17.

Daniel Dickinson reports

ICTs are the catalysts for shaping the future development agenda according to Houlin Zhao, the Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union, ITU, which is organizing this annual celebration.

In a message, Mr Zhao said ICTs pervade every aspect of our lives and will play a key role in the post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals, which the international community is now formulating.

World Telecommunication Day has been celebrated annually on 17 May since 1969.

It marks the founding of the ITU and the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention in 1865.
