Education is a powerful weapon against the rise of violent extremism, the UN Secretary-General has said.

Ban Ki-moon was speaking at the opening of the World Education Forum currently underway in the South Korean city of Incheon.

Daniel Dickinson reports.

The World Education Forum has brought together more than 130 government ministers from around the world as well as Nobel Laureates, heads of international organizations, academics, representatives of the private sector, and civil society.

The Forum will set the global education agenda for the next 15 years.

Opening the meeting, the UN chief, Ban Ki-moon, said that studying can pull people out of poverty and help to build a peaceful world.

"Education is a powerful weapon to fight security threats, including the rise of violent extremism. The terrorists know this. That is why they keep attacking schools.”

The Forum will run until Friday and will focus on five key themes; the right to education, quality, inclusive and equitable education and lifelong learning.
