70,000 children face malnutrition in Nepal

One month after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Nepal, an estimated 70,000 children under the age of five are at risk of malnutrition and require urgent humanitarian support; that's according to the UN Children's Fund, UNICEF.

Around 15,000 children in 14 of the worst-hit districts need therapeutic foods for the treatment of severe acute malnutrition.

UNICEF said it was concerned that gains in nutrition that the country has achieved in the past few years could be reversed as a result of the earthquake disaster.

Benefits of progress in Africa must be spread says UN chief

The benefits brought about by progress in Africa must be spread "more broadly and deeply" the UN Secretary-General has said.

The UN chief said the continent continues to make steady economic, social and political gains.

Overall, its economy grew by roughly 4 per cent in 2014.

Marking Africa Day, Ban Ki-moon said more Africans, particularly women and girls, need to feel the benefits of that economic expansion.

He said more equal and prosperous societies are created if women are empowered.

Antibiotic drug resistance plan launched

A global action plan to tackle antibiotic resistance has been endorsed at the UN World Health Assembly in Geneva.

The UN health agency, WHO, said resistance is occurring across the world, compromising the ability to treat infectious diseases.

It also undermines many other advances in health and medicine.

The plan sets out five key objectives focusing on the use of antibiotics as well as encouraging more investment in countering resistance.
