Sexual violence in conflict is a concern in 19 countries around the world

Forty-five armed groups in 19 countries around the world have been identified as probably responsible for rape or other acts of sexual violence.

The UN Secretary-General's report on Sexual Violence in Conflict, which was released on Tuesday, contains accounts of violence by terrorist groups such as Boko Haram in Nigeria and ISIL in Iraq and Syria.

Zainab Hawa Bangura is the Secretary-General's Special Representative on the issue.

Radmilla Suleymanova sat down with Ms Bangura who began by giving an update on current developments.

Former No.1 tennis athlete working to advance gender equality

Athletes have a platform to advocate for human rights that very few people have, according to an American former professional tennis player.

Billie Jean King, who was ranked number one player in the world for six years, was at UN Headquarters to mark the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace.

She says she was one of the first athletes to come out as a gay person which at the time cost her every endorsement.

Andrew Giacalone met with Ms King and began by asking her how human rights and sports are interconnected.

Caesarean study reveals potential harm of rising trend

More lives could be saved in poorer countries through better access to caesarean section, the World Health Organization (WHO) recently stressed.

At the same time, the UN health agency also cautioned against unnecessary caesareans in richer countries, as it can increase the risk of complications for women and their babies.

Doctors and hospitals often promote the operation as it “makes their lives easier”, said WHO’s Dr Marleen Temmerman, who insisted that mothers should be told about the risks associated with the procedure.
