We must fight anti-gypsy bias, says UN rights expert

Deeply embedded discrimination against Roma communities must be overcome by a new commitment to help them from state authorities, a UN expert said Wednesday.

On International Roma Day, minority issues investigator Rita Izsak said that growing extremism in many countries fuelled by sensationalist media reports had increased the stigmatization of Roma people, who number an estimated 10 to 15 million in Europe.

The UN human rights office expert told Daniel Johnson that government officials were increasingly afraid to tackle the issue but they could start by taking steps to increase their representation at a political level.
