Resistance to medicine a major challenge in fighting malaria in Asia

Asia is the second worst affected continent after Africa in terms of malaria deaths, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Globally, the disease claims the lives of more than half a million people each year.Malaria is caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through mosquito bites. It is preventable and curable. World Malaria Day is observed on 25 April each year to put a spotlight on the disease and the efforts that are being made to eliminate it. Derrick Mbatha sat down with Hervé Verhoosel, the New York Representative of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership who first compared the challenge of malaria in Asia to the one in Africa.

Access to justice for women victims of violence in Afghanistan needs to be strengthened. That's according to a report released by the UN mission in the country ,UNAMA. It says that while there is a legal framework in place for such cases, there remain many factors hindering access to justice for women. Hamed Haleemi has filed this story from Kabul.

"Unacceptable" number of deaths in south-east Asia due to ferry transit

The continued loss of so many in south-east Asia due to unsafe ferry trips is unacceptable, according to the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Last year's figures show that since 2000, there have been 163 accidents in the region involving ferries, killing more than 17,000 people. Experts have been meeting in Manila, the capital of the Philippines to discuss how to improve safety. Stephanie Coutrix spoke on the line to Manila with IMO's Lee Adamson. She began by asking him how important ferry transport is to south-east-Asia.
