Better crisis coordination needed between military and civil organizations

Coordination between military and civil organizations in times of humanitarian crises needs to be improved according to a senior disaster relief expert in Singapore.

Militaries around the world have been increasingly called on to help the aid effort when disasters strike, but their involvement does pose challenges.

The UN and Singapore government have been hosting the World Humanitarian Summit this week in the south-east Asian country to discuss civil-military cooperation.

Colonel Lim Kwang Tang, is the Director of the Changi Regional Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Coordination Centre in Singapore.

Daniel Dickinson asked him what is meant by civil-military coordination in the context of humanitarian assistance.

Solomon Islanders preserve forests with eco-tourism

The people of the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific are looking at how to preserve their traditional way of life in the face of increased interest from logging companies.

With the support of the United Nations the islanders have found a way to protect their pristine virgin forests and provide much-needed sources of income through new eco-tourism ventures.

Developing countries supported in forest monitoring

A number of countries in Asia are due to be supported in their efforts to monitor their forests.

A  US$4.5 million project agreed between Norway and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is expected to facilitate access to data sources.

Many developing countries find it challenging to gather and process data for a wide variety of reasons; for example poor Internet connections or outdated computer systems.

Erik Lindquist is a forestry officer with FAO.

Sandra Ferrari asked him why there is a gap in data gathering.
