Silent and underfunded chronic humanitarian situation in DPRK

A silent and underfunded chronic humanitarian crisis has developed in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), according to the United Nations. The Organization has just released a report on the needs and priorities of the country in 2015. The UN is calling for US$111 million to fund its humanitarian operations. Meanwhile, funding for its agencies that are assisting 18 million food-insecure North Koreans has decreased by more than 80 per cent over the past decade. Stephanie Coutrix spoke with Ghulam Isaczai, the UN Resident Coordinator in DPR Korea, and began by asking him to describe in what conditions the people there are living.

A factory inspector in Sri Lanka is using a UN developed app on a tablet device to improve efficiency and ensure compliance with labour laws. The app called LISA has been written by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and was used for the first time in the south Asian country. It's not only making the work of inspectors easier, it's ultimately improving employer-worker relations. Daniel Dickinson has more details.

Fighting in South Sudan should stop "for sake of the children"

An Asian pop singer, academic, novelist and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Japan is urging the warring factions in South Sudan to stop fighting for what she called "the sake of the children." Agnes Chan is in the country's Western Equatoria state to assess the availability of education for children. South Sudan continues to endure a conflict which has pitted government forces against rebels. Hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced and many children have been unable to attend school. Felix Francis Katie has been speaking to Agnes Chan. He began by asking her about what she had seen in Western Equatoria.
